Positioned in the heart of Canberra’s fastest growing region, the Gungahlin Community Centre exhibits how glazing can become a defining architectural feature beyond simply a functional element.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Generous glazed windows and doors frame the surrounding landscape at every turn, flooding the interior with natural light and connecting people inside to the space around them. A continuous ribbon of glazing wraps around the building’s angled and stepped form across two levels.
Finished in Zeus Matt Black, Series 806 Thermally Broken CentreGLAZE™ Framing creates strong horizontal lines that contrast against the vertical timber cladding, sharpening the building’s geometry while pulling natural light deep into the spaces inside.
Many of the angular window openings fell outside standard manufacturing parameters. Castle Glazing hand-processed and custom fabricated these sections, producing detailed CAD drawings for every window across the nearly 2,000-square-metre facility to maintain consistent glazing lines from start to finish. Canberra’s climate demanded strong thermal performance.
The AWS ThermalHEART™ range was selected to reduce heat transfer and improve occupant comfort year-round. At the Youth Hub entrance, the Series 852 ThermalHEART™ Sliding Door paired with the FlowTHRU™ Pro flush threshold delivers a level, seamless transition for wheelchair users, prams and visitors of all ages. The result is a contemporary community building where aluminium windows and doors enhance architectural expression, perform to Canberra’s climate, and will serve the community for generations to come.
