Continuing Professional Development with AWS
Architectural Window Systems (AWS) is pleased to offer a series of complimentary CPD presentations developed specifically for architects, building designers and industry professionals. Delivered by experienced AWS representatives, each session provides practical, standards-based guidance on the specification of aluminium window and door systems, helping practitioners navigate evolving compliance requirements while delivering high-performing, durable and architecturally refined outcomes.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Designed to support informed specification rather than promote products, AWS CPDs explore the technical principles behind successful façade design, drawing on Australian Standards, independent testing and real-world project experience. Sessions are available online or in person at a time that suits your practice, with opportunities for discussion and project-specific questions. Register your practice to book a session and earn valuable formal CPD while gaining practical knowledge you can apply with confidence.

CPD 1
Understanding Acoustics for Windows & Doors – Design Principles and Solutions for the External Envelope
Summary:
This CPD: Understanding Acoustics will explore how windows and doors contribute to the acoustic performance of the building envelope. We’ll unpack the fundamentals of sound, how it is measured, and how it behaves in built environments. Then we’ll move into testing standards and acoustic ratings before examining real-world design and specification factors for windows and doors.
AACA NSCA Competency Standards related to this session:
PC12 PRACTICE MANAGEMENT AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
PC24 PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
PC28 PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
PC33 PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
PC46 DETAILED DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this presentation you should be able to:
- Explain the fundamental properties of sound and how it behaves in built environments.
- Describe the standard acoustic testing procedures for windows and doors, including relevant ratings and compliance benchmarks.
- Evaluate the acoustic performance of various door and window systems and glazing types.
- Identify project-specific acoustic requirements and select appropriate window and door solutions to meet performance goals.
CPD 2
A Guide to Window and Door Design & Compliance in Bushfire Prone Areas
Summary:
Australia's bushfire-prone landscape presents unique challenges for the design and specification of windows and doors. As critical elements of the building envelope, these systems play an important role in protecting homes from ember attack, radiant heat and direct flame contact. Achieving compliance with bushfire construction requirements is not only essential for meeting the National Construction Code, but also for improving the resilience of buildings in bushfire-prone areas.
In this CPD, AWS explores the requirements of AS 3959:2018 Construction of Buildings in Bushfire-Prone Areas and the role it plays in the specification of compliant aluminium window and door systems. Participants will gain an understanding of how Bushfire Attack Levels (BALs) are determined, how they influence product selection and design, and the performance features required to help protect buildings against bushfire attack.
AACA NSCA Competency Standards:
PC12 PRACTICE MANAGEMENT AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
PC24 PRACTICE MANAGEMENT AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
PC39 DETAILED DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION
PC45 DETAILED DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this presentation you should be able to:
- Explain how buildings come under attack in a bushfire.
- Provide an overview of AS 3959 and its role in the design and construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas.
- Explain how Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) is determined under the relevant Australian Standard (AS 3959).
- Describe how different BALs affect the specification of windows and door systems including the requirements for compliant design.
