Architecturally inspired systems for superior style and performance

House at Sunshine Beach

The latest video in the Architectural Window Systems Designer Notes series.

Lindy Atkin and Steve Guthrie of Bark Design Architects discuss the challenging brief behind House at Sunshine Beach in Noosa, Queensland.

The brief featured complex ideas such as wanting to have access to an ocean view directly from the bed, regardless of the narrow frontage. A concealed basement, and being able to park vehicles beneath the house despite the fact that the existing slope was steeper than what a driveway was permitted to be.

Despite the highly saline location of the dwelling, a reduction in required maintenance was achieved through the use of aluminium doors and windows. This helped to minimise the negative effects of salt corrosion.

Breeze and light manipulation and termperature control also feature, through the creative use of Vantage 525 LouvreMaster Windows.

With a playful flow between landscape and interior, as well as a focus on the Japanese ideology of "Wabi-Sabi", the end product is a timeless ode to both the ingenuity of the client and the beauty of the surrounding natural environment.
