Initially the clients approached Joe Chindarsi of Chindarsi Architects with a book of Danish summer houses they picked up on a recent trip to Europe as a brief for their new home.
Joe Chindarsi eagerly began exploring concept designs for this project around the Australian vernacular, coupled with a European style of living in the Western Australian countryside.
This house is designed around the idea of an “Australian Shed” however, it encompasses a more muscular and angled design element throughout. The project is intended to depict a weathered stone amongst a bush setting.
The way light enters and exits the home was a major consideration for Joe Chindarsi whilst designing this house. It was important to maximise the north-facing aspects of the glazing to ensure there was solar gain in the winter months.
Elevate™ Aluminium Systems Series 704 SlideMASTER™ sliding doors have been utilised in the living space of the home as they are able to be manufactured with larger opening sizes. The large sliding doors permitted the landscape to be encompassed throughout the main living spaces in the home.
For the windows to the south, east and west, they are much more protected and more like punched openings that frame the view into the bush.
Where the design required the materiality of the structure to disappear, Joe utilised the Elevate™ Aluminium Systems commercial framing system that was able to be wrapped around a corner to maximise views of the countryside. The aluminium windows and doors are all BAL-29 compliant for this bushfire rated site.
The way the house sits within the landscape, allows the occupants to look out and reflect on their surroundings. This is quintessential of the Danish summer house brief initially given by the clients.
